A Love-In-Transit Story: Alison’s Private Tour + Public Engagement
“My boyfriend and I were visiting New York from Austin, TX, and attending a swanky reception at Grand Central Terminal in honor of authors from Grand Central Publishing. After getting our picture taken with Stephen Colbert (eee!), a security guard saw us talking off to the side of the crowd and asked us if we would like a tour of the station.
He took us to an area most people never see, much less even know about: into the walls of the station itself. We were standing on thick glass floors, looking out and down at the people at the reception and travelers going about their business. It was magical.
After the tour, we were gushing about how nice the security guard was, how special this experience was. In the middle of the floor, under the American flag, my boyfriend said he wanted to take my picture. He knelt to get a shot upwards, then handed me the camera to make sure the photo turned out nicely. As I was looking at the picture, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring. We’ve been married for 5 years now, and I still get a goofy grin every time someone mentions Grand Central Terminal.”
